Here we explain several MORE misconceptions about back pain.

Myth 7: I am told the pain is “all in my head”.
Reality: Just because a physical cause for your pain cannot be identified, this does not mean your pain is”all in your head.” This is because of how the nervous system processes information. For individuals who experience chronic pain, there are programs that can keep the pain manageable and allow the body to heal.

Myth 8: I will need to see a Chiropractor every week in order to control the pain.
Reality: While it is not uncommon for patients to receive treatments several times in a week initially, this should not be required long term. The number of visits will then taper over time as the pain and injury subside. Your Chiropractor can work with you to determine a treatment and wellness schedule for optimal healing. After your condition is stable, it’s possible you may only need to see your Chiropractor once a month or once a year to maintain the positive effects of treatment.

Myth 9: I can’t do my favorite activities such as hiking or gardening anymore.
Reality: It is always important to listen to your body and respect that it may have some limitations. But don’t jump to the conclusion that all your favorite activities are over with. With a well planned exercise program, including core conditioning and flexibility exercise, you will find it possible to return to most if not all of your favorite activities. In addition, learning good body mechanics to use when doing your favorite activities will help prevent more pain.

Myth 10: I am active and have a lot of muscle mass, so I won’t get back pain.
Reality: While staying active is the best plan to prevent and heal back injury, bad habits while engaging in these activities can often cause back injury or pain. Muscle groups must experience balanced work with proper body mechanics. If there is no balance then you may experience a buildup of tension in one area, and find weakness in another. Working with your Chiropractor, physical therapist or a personal trainer to develop a balanced exercise program that includes adjustments, strength training and stretching for all muscle groups, is very effective for pain and injury prevention.

Myth 11: I have back pain so I will need surgery.
Reality: It is a very small percentage of individuals with back pain who eventually undergo surgery. In fact research has shown that about 90% of back pain will subside on its own. There are very few instances where back surgery becomes your only option. Many times these are medical emergencies such as a broken neck or weakness in the legs that gets progressively worse. Before looking for a surgical option consult many individuals such as medical doctors, chiropractors, personal trainers, physical therapists, and massage therapists. A good exercise program and schedule of care can make a real difference in your pain and overall wellness.
