Get moving! That's what health experts say is important for better health and a longer life. And the good news is, even a small amount of exercise makes a big difference to your health.

Every Little Bit of Exercise Counts

Typical exercise recommendations are pretty high: 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. What if you don't meet these recommendations? A new study reports that exercise in much more modest amounts is still of great benefit.

Just 15 minutes per day of moderate physical activity-such as taking a walk-can lower your risk of death by 22%, according to a new study by Dr. David Hupin of the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne in France. The study monitored people older than 60, but previous studies have shown similar benefits in younger people.

The more exercise you do, the greater the benefits, the study said. But the biggest benefit was seen in the lowest level of activity-the equivalent of a 15-minute brisk walk each day.

Start Small and Build Your Exercise Routine

People may defer exercise because they can't or don't want to exercise vigorously. But starting small and working your way up to more vigorous exercise can make you feel much better and live longer.

Change your habits gradually; start small. If you have been living a sedentary lifestyle, add a little walking to your daily routine for better health and longevity.
